Lip Filler Aftercare: What to Expect in the First 48 Hours and Beyond

Whether you’ve just had lip fillers or you’re researching before you book, knowing what happens after the treatment is just as important as the treatment itself. Good aftercare protects your results, keeps you comfortable, and helps you tell the difference between what’s completely normal and what’s worth a quick call. At our Streatham and Sydenham clinics, every patient leaves with clear guidance — but here’s an overview so you know what to expect.

The first 24 hours

It’s normal for your lips to feel a little tender and to look swollen immediately after treatment — sometimes more than you might expect. This is simply your body’s natural response to the injections and to the filler settling in, not a sign that anything is wrong. Some mild bruising or small pinpoint marks where the needle entered are also common and fade quickly.

In these first hours, it helps to keep things gentle: avoid touching or pressing your lips, skip strenuous exercise, and steer clear of very hot drinks or food while any numbing wears off. A cool compress held gently against the lips can ease swelling if you need it.

The first 48 hours to a week

Swelling typically peaks within the first day or two and then begins to settle. Many people find their lips look their “final” way somewhere between one and two weeks after treatment, once any swelling has fully resolved and the filler has integrated. It’s genuinely worth being patient here — judging your result on day two, when you’re at your most swollen, will give you a misleading impression.

During this period it’s sensible to avoid alcohol for the first day or so, hold off on intense workouts briefly, and be gentle with the area. If you wear makeup, give the injection points a little time before applying anything directly to your lips.

What’s normal — and what to watch for

Mild swelling, tenderness, small bruises, and slight asymmetry while swelling settles are all expected and resolve on their own. What we always tell patients is this: if anything feels genuinely wrong — significant or worsening pain, blanching or unusual colour changes in the lips or surrounding skin, or anything that worries you — contact the clinic straight away rather than waiting. Serious complications are rare, but the single biggest advantage of doctor-led treatment is having a qualified medical professional you can reach if you ever need to.

This is exactly why who treats you matters. With Dr Mirali, a GMC-registered doctor, aftercare isn’t an afterthought — it’s part of the care, and you’re never left wondering who to turn to.

Helping your results last

Lip fillers aren’t permanent, and how long they last varies from person to person. Staying well hydrated, looking after your skin, protecting your lips from sun, and keeping up with reviews when recommended all help you get the most from your treatment. When the time comes for a top-up, a gradual, conservative approach keeps things looking natural rather than overdone.

If you have questions about lip filler aftercare, or you’d like a doctor-led consultation before booking, we’re here to help at our Streatham and Sydenham clinics. Dr Mirali will talk you through every stage — before, during, and after — so you feel informed and looked after at each step.
